How Dancing Helped Us Build a Stronger Family

When you’re a parent, your life becomes very different. You have limited time and energy, your priorities change and you need to be more intentional about how you spend your time. That’s why we decided to take up dance lessons as a family. Not only is dancing fun, but it also forces you to be present in the moment, with another person — and that has wonderful benefits for parents and kids alike. Here are some reasons why taking up dancing classes as a family was one of the best things we did as parents.

★ Build Strong Communication Skills

Dance is a form of communication. It can help you to be more expressive and to connect with another person in a very real, non-verbal way. Not only does this build strong communication skills in your children, but also in you as a parent. How often do we get frustrated with our kids because we just don’t know how to communicate our feelings to them? If you’ve ever tried to do a little dance with your child, you know what we’re talking about! Taking up dance as a family can help you to be more expressive and to connect with one another on a deeper level than you might have thought possible.

★ Help You Feel Confident and Happy

We all want our kids to be happy and confident. But as parents, we also want to set a good example and be happy ourselves. Dance is a joyful form of exercise that can really help you to feel happy and confident. Part of the reason is that because you are moving to music, you don’t have to think about what you are doing. Instead, you can let go and just let the music move you. Once you let go, you will find that you feel happier and more confident. Your child will pick up on that and will want to be just like you: happy and confident.

★ Help Your Child Develop Self-Esteem and Confidence

Dance also helps your child to feel confident and self-esteem. But how is this possible? Well, for starters, your child will feel like a rock star. You’ll show up to class with your child and be surrounded by other kids (and some grown-ups) who are just as excited to dance. When your child is given the opportunity to shine, they will feel proud of themselves. They will also get a chance to interact with other kids their age and learn that they are just as good as anyone else around them. When we feel confident and self-esteem, we tend to feel more confident in everything we do.

★ Learn to be Present With Others

Taking up dance as a family can help you and your child to learn to be present with one another. This can be especially helpful for parents who are often busy with work and may feel like they don’t spend enough time with their families. Dance is a sport that requires you to be present with your partner or with the people you are dancing with. Taking up dance with your family may not always be easy, but it will help you to be present with your kids and let go of the stresses of the day.

Taking up dance can help you and your family to be more expressive, confident and connected. Whether you do it as a family or as an individual, dance will open up a whole new world of fun and positive possibilities. It will take time and effort to build up your skills and find a dance style that works for you, your kids and your family as a unit. But it will be worth the effort. Dance can help you to be more expressive, confident and present, and it can help your children to be the same.
